Perry Dalziell
Walhampton recently hosted the 42nd edition of the Perry Dalziell Cross Country race, an event that has been a Walhampton tradition since 1980. We were delighted to welcome back Robert Dalziell, one of the founders of this event. Thankfully, although it was chilly, the weather was kind to us and the course was dry.
It was wonderful to see our Walhampton children displaying our value of kindness in the manner they welcomed our visitors from 15 local schools. Our Year 8 helpers deserve a special mention and thanks, they chaperoned visiting schools and marshalled on the course displaying great maturity and vocal support for their younger peers. Thank you to all the parents and spectators that came to cheer on the runners, this made for a lovely atmosphere at the finish line which I know the children really appreciated.
Mr Dalziell touched on this point in his speech: "Sport is not just about ‘the taking part’, it’s also not just about ‘winning’. Sport is about the journey we go on, whether that is as an individual or a group. The character that we develop from the knocks and hard lessons, the moments of glory to celebrate together, the satisfaction of doing your best and being proud of yourself." All of the Walhampton children should be very proud for doing their personal best on Wednesday, whichever position they finished in.
Special mention goes to Betty who finished 4th in the Year 4 Girls race, Scarlett 4th in the Year 5 Girls, Frankie 2nd and Zach 5th in the Year 5 Boys. Congratulations also to all of our Year 6s who maturely and sensibly managed a route confusion and finally a special mention to Zach W for determination and perseverance running his best race, well done all!
