The Role

These positions are varied and rewarding, offering excellent opportunities for school or university leavers to work alongside subject teachers and contribute to a range of areas across the School and within the boarding environment. While typically lasting for one year, shorter-term roles are available for those seeking experience for just a term.

Graduate Assistants are typically current undergraduates who wish to gain experience working with young people in a school environment, perhaps as a prelude to a career in teaching. They also participate in the School’s extensive extra-curricular programme, contributing to both academic and pastoral experiences. It is hoped that the School will help successful candidates develop their skills and gain valuable experience in areas aligned with their interests, such as classroom teaching, instrumental teaching, directing, or coaching, where this benefits pupils.

Gap Students, in particular, play an important role in supporting Boarding staff. Their responsibilities include managing wake-ups and bedtimes, overseeing meal time registrations, administering medication, organizing evening activities, and providing general pastoral care. The role demands hard work, dedication, and adaptability. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, responsible, and energetic, with a genuine interest in working with children. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals considering a career in education or working with young people.

Many Graduate and Gap Assistants go on to pursue careers in teaching and working with children.  These roles provide a valuable opportunity to gain experience before starting a PGCE or to earn paid work experience either before or after university.
